Biological Diversity
The first file that was signed by Baalu as Environment Minister was relating to the legislation on Biological Diversity and setting up of the National Bio-Diversity Authority. The Biological Diversity Bill, the first of its kind in the World was passed by Parliament in November 2002. Given the richness in biological diversity comprising mountains, long coastlines, marine environment, forests and wildlife, arid zone, fertile deltaic region etc. in Tamil Nadu, Baalu, with the approval of the Union Cabinet, rightly succeeded in setting up the National Biodiversity Authority at Chennai despite reservations from several opposition parties including Congress. This initiative demonstrated India’s resolve to conserve the biological wealth of India under the aegis of the United Nations Convention of Biological Diversity of which India become a signatory in xxx. |
