Conservation of Lakes

Like rivers, T.R. Baalu gave a major fillip to the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) also for cleaning of polluted lakes in the country. During his regime as many as 26 new lakes including Ooty and Kodaikanal of Tamil Nadu were included under this programme. Baalu has to his credit sanctioning of a mega project of cleaning of DAL lake in Sri Nagar at an outlay of Rs.300 crore and five important lakes of Uttarakhand including the famous Nainital Lake at an outlay of Rs.65 crore. Like NRCP, the outlay of NLCP recorded a 10 fold increase from from Rs.25 crore in the IX Plan to Rs.220 crore in X Plan.
