National Green Corps

Baalu had an obsession to develop an NCC like Corps as a sustainable way of conserving environment. He launched a National Green Corps in June 2001 with the main objective of involving students at school level in creating awareness for the protection of environment. In its very first phase, the scheme received big response from States. Till December 2003 just before DMK left the NDA, a total of 52000 schools in 593 districts involving 25 lakh students were covered under this scheme and an expenditure of Rs.17 crore incurred.
