Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways

After the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he was elected from Sriperumbudur and became the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Railways in Parliament. During this period he sought the speedy completion of several important railway projects, including the Trichy-Thanjavur electrified double line, the Villupuram-Thanjavur broad-gauge project, and the operation of new Express Trains from Chennai to Mannargudi and from Mannargudi to Tirupati, Jodhpur etc.
