T.R. Baalu

T.R. Baalu (​​Thalikottai Rajuthevar Baalu) is an Member of Lok Sabha for Sriperumbudur Constiteuncy and Indian Tamil Politician.

Presently he is the Treasurer of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

In the year 1941 at Thalikottai Village near Mannargudi circle (present day Thiruvarur District – Integrated Tanjore District) T.R Baalu ​​born to father Rajuthevar and mother Vadivaambaal as their 3rd Son.

Father Rajudevar belonged to a farming family was loved by villagers and he was called fondely as Sattaampillai of the village.

T.R. Baalu ​​holds a B.Sc graduation from “Chennai Puthukalloori” (University of Madras). Studied engineering in Chennai Central Polytechnic.

T.R. Baalu has been elected to the Lok Sabha of India for 6 times since 1996. Earlier he was a member of Indian parliament Rajya sabha (Upper House) for six years from 1986 to 1992.

1996-1998: Minister of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Non-Conventional Resources.
1998: Elected to Lok Sabha for the second time.
1999: Elected to Lok Sabha for the third time.
1999-2003: Minister, Environment and Forests.
2004: Elected to Lok Sabha for the fourth time from South Chennai (Lok Sabha constituency).
2004-2009: Minister for Shipping, Road Transport & Highways.
2009: Elected to Lok Sabha for the fifth time from Sriperumbudur.
2019: Elected to Lok Sabha for the sixth time from Sriperumbudur.

POLITICAL LIFE

T.R. Baalu

Thalikottai Rajuthevar Baalu is the present “Treasurer” of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Is known for his political loyalty, tireless service and ideological commitment.

T.R. Baalu is a successful Political Leader and Social Activist with engineering background and long experience in different fields.

T. R. Baalu’s political career started at a very early age of sixteen (1957) when he joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

T. R. Baalu was greatly inspired by the political ideologies of Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi and began to travel with him, when he started his life in Chennai Royapettah. Since 1968 devoted himself fully to work for the Party. That was the period when the current leader of the DMK and Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Mr. Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin also began his political career. They two bonded together and took part in many struggles of the party.

T.R. Baalu became Chennai District Secretary of DMK in the year of 1982. Imprisoned for more than 20 times for participating in demonstrations and agitations.

He became to political limelight when he was imprisoned for one year under MISA Act in 1976, for protesting against the Emergency declared in the country by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

T.R. Baalu made a strong protest for the notorious midnight arrest of his Leader Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi during June 30, 2001 inspite of being a Union Minister. His protest is remembered not only in Tamil Nadu but in the political circles the world over.

T. R. Baalu elected as a member of Parliament Rajya Sabha in 1986 to 1992, He took part in many healthy debates at Parliament and began to make his mark, by the guidance of his parliamentary Guru Murasoli Maran.

In 1996 elected to Parliament Lok Sabha from South Chennai Constituency and became the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He was also entitled additional responsibility for Ministry of Non Conventional Energy Resources (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) during his tenure.

T. R. Baalu was elected to Lok Sabha in 1998, 1999 and 2004 from South Chennai Constituency and in 2009 & 2019 from Sriperumbudur Constituency.

Chennai District Secretary of D.M.K

In the year of 1974 T.R. Baalu became the Deputy District Secretary of DMK, In the year of 1982 rose to became Chennai District Secretary of DMK .

He received the praise of the leadership for leading the various struggles announced by the leadership.

During the emergency act in the years of 1975-77, Leading Active soldiers of DMK and the party members were affected by the Misa atrocities. In January 30, 1976 the DMK Government dissolved.

When trials were intensified on DMK, T.R. Baalu sided by the Party president Kalaignar with courage and trust.

Member of Parliamant

Spearheaded many important struggles of DMK including the Sri Lankan Tamil struggle in Chennai.
He was predicted as a man of trust and courageous policy catcher by the leadership.
From the year of 1986 (except the year 1991-1996) for more than 30 years he is dominating the Indian Parliament as the voice of war for Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
During 1986 to 1992 T.R. Baalu was a Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha. Since 1996 is being a Member of Lok Sabha Parliament for 6 times continuously to date.

Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas (1996–1998)

Achievements: 
Conducted conferences in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in June-July 1997 to attract foreign investors to search Petroleum Resources in India.
Made projects for making Cooking Gas Cylinders readily available to rural area people
Made a revolution in providing license for LNG import terminals and Petrol bunk.

Minister of Environment and Forests (1999-2003)

Environmental protection is an international movement. He participated in the UN Conference on the Environment and made India’s contribution constructive.

On behalf of India he made strong voice on the implementation of international agreements on climate change, Ozone zone protection and sustainable development, on developing UN programs to enable developing countries to acquire the necessary funding and technology to meet these challenges .

In October 2002 he successfully hosted the 8th UN Conference on Climate Change in New Delhi and issued International Covenant in the name of “Delhi Declaration”

During his tenure as Minister of Environment, he was the only Tamizhan to become the Global Chair of the United Nations Environment Organization, receiving the praise of the UN organization and the praise of the world he added pride to India.

Minister of Shipping Road Transport and Highways Department (2004 - 2009)

Some specific achievements of T. R. Baalu when he was the Minister of Shipping Road Transport and Highways Department are :
Laid Foundation Stone of Sethu Samudra Project.
Created the National Maritime Development Project worth of Rs.100000 Crores.
Made great efforts to upgrade the 4/6 way National highways to International standards.

Treasurer, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (2020 - till date)

The leadership gave him various party responsibilities and made him proud. Appointed as a member of the Party’s High Level Task Force. Appointed as the party’s principal secretary, served actively for one year.

T.R Baalu was elected as Treasurer of Dravida Munnnetra Kazhagam in 2020.

Man of DMK Election Manifesto
Political parties across India are eagerly awaiting the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s election manifesto, which will be released during each election. T.R Baalu’s energy in preparing that election manifesto was different.

He chaired the 2019 Parliamentary Election Report Preparation Committee for the party with the help of techniques learned from the experiences of Perarignar Anna, Muthamizharignar Kalaignar and Murasoli Maran. The DMK Party won 38 of the 39 constituencies and was a huge success.

Similarly M.K Stalin, the proud leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, appointed T.R Baalu as the Chairman of the Election Manifesto Preparation Committee for the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections.

According to their belief, baalu travelled district wise for about 9 months, Met with various section of the people in the district and received their applications, Based on them he created the Election Manifesto. DMK leader Stalin released the Election Manifesto which was widely praised by the people.

As a result, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alone won 125 seats in 2021 Tamilnadu Legislative Elections and made new history on 7-5-2021.
The role of T. R. Baalu as DMK Treasurer is significant for this success.

About T.R. Baalu Family

T. R. Baalu has been loyal to the leadership to this day. Even before coming to power and responsibility in politics, he worked hard in his personal life to become successful in various professions and effectively led them all.

In between, he married Porkodi and Renukadevi. He has three sons(T. R. B. Raj Kumar, T. R. B Raja, T. R. B Selvakumar) and two daughters (Kanchanadevi, Manonmani).
T.R. Baalu is an excellent guide to them.

Today, his sons lead his business and add to his pride. His son T.R.B. Rajkumar manages the businesses he started neatly and adds fame to his father T.R.Baalu. Another son T.R.B. Raja has been involved in politics and won the Mannargudi Assembly constituency three times in a row in the Assembly elections held in 2011, 2016 and 2021 and he is serving as an Tamilnadu Legislative Member.

My Sriperumbudur Constituency

Won the parliament elections in 2009 and 2019 from Sriperumbudur Constituency. Presently serving the Sriperumbudur constituency people as a Member of Parliament.

Sriperumbudur is situated in Kanchipuram District, Tamilnadu. It is a famous Vaishnava’s site located 40 kilometers southwest from Chennai on the National Highway 4, just outside the Chennai Metropolitan Area.
It is one of the fastest growing neighbourhood of Chennai Suburban area.
Since 2000, Sriperumbudur has seen rapid industrialisation.
It is known as the birthplace of Sri Ramanuja, one of the most prominent Hindu Vaishnava saints.

Adikesava Perumal Temple is the birthplace of Ramanuja, the Hindu saint and philosopher. Ramanujar’s vigraha (statue) was installed in this temple during he was alive and therefore called “Thamugantha Thirumani”

In Sriperumbudur the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assasinated in 1991.
The Rajiv Gandhi Memorial built at the site where he was assassinated, It was dedicated to the nation by the then President of India Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam in 2003.

Vallakottai Murugan temple, 9 km from Sriperumbudur, is known for the tallest Lord Murugan statue in India (9 metres [30 feet]).

Sriperumbudur parliament constituency is the largest constituency of India which consists of 24 lacs voters.

T. R. Baalu won this constituency in 2009, Again in 2019 he competed this constituency and won with more than 7 lacs votes
