Transport sector is one of the major sources of Air Pollution, especially in urban areas where it accounts for nearly 70% of pollution. To address this problem, low sulphur diesel (0.05% in Metros and 0.25% at other places) and unleaded petrol were introduced in the country during Baalu’s regime as Environment Minister. Bharat-II standards were enforced for all new vehicles and a road map prepared for progressive introduction of further improved vehicular emission standards by 2010.
