DMK, a Major Partner in National Democratic Alliance
After the fall of the one year old BJP Government at the Centre headed by Thiru A.B. Vajpayee in 1999, elections were held for the Lok Sabha. DMK was a partner in National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by BJP in that election. MDMK and PMK were the other partners in NDA from Tamil Nadu. NDA won the elections and Government headed by Thiru A.B. Vajpayee as Prime Minister assumed Office on 13th October, 1999. T.R. Baalu joined the Cabinet as the Minister of Environment and Forests. Thiru Murasoli Maran became the Minister of Industry and Commerce, and Thiru A. Raja as Minister of State for Rural Development. The portfolios allocated to DMK Ministers only indicate the importance the party commanded in the NDA. |
