Stockholm Convention on POPs
Baalu focused on reduction of Persistent Organic Pollutants or POPs which are manmade chemicals like pesticides and pose serious threat to men and animals because of their high toxicity, persistence in environment and in fatty tissues of living organisms and propensity to bio-accumulate in food chains. He led the Indian Delegation at the Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Stockholm Convention on POPs held at Stockholm, Sweden on 22-23 May 2001. Under Baalu’s leadership, India played a leading role in adoption and signing of the Convention. It was a great achievement that 91 countries and the European Commission were prepared to sign the Convention on the very first day.
